Assistive Technology Engineer

Location: Remote, 75% travel required

The Assistive Technology Engineer helps ensure accessibility of technology for people with disabilities and older users, with an emphasis on assistive technology compatibility, configuration, and scripting. The successful candidate must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and demonstrate the ability to prioritize and multi-task a variety of demanding assignments without a degradation of work quality.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct accessibility assessments on applications or websites to determine barriers that may be faced by assistive technology users
  • Create JAWS customizations and scripts to overcome accessibility barriers found in applications or websites
  • Collaborate with other team members to find the best solution for the client
  • Write up assessment reports, describing accessibility issues and recommendations for resolving them
  • Provide assistive technology or accessibility training to clients, on-site and off-site
  • Answer accessibility related questions, through helpdesk tickets and client conference calls
  • Be able to convey and explain technical concepts to non-technical individuals
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in JAWS scripting and configuration

Basic Qualifications

  • 5 years accessibility experience
  • Strong background in JAWS scripting and customization as well as related technologies, such as, UIA and XML
  • Solid understanding of accessibility evaluation tools and methods
  • Have working knowledge with the user requirements of people with disabilities and older users, with regard to accessibility of Windows applications and the web
  • Must be motivated and a quick learner, able to work both independently and as team player
  • Effective working knowledge of accessibility verification tools, assistive technologies, and accessibility standards
  • Must be willing to travel to customer sites to perform job duties when necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent degree/relevant
    experience.
